How to get a Kazakhstan visa?

As of April 2023, Kazakhstan allows citizens of 77 countries to enter without a visa. You can find the full list of visa-free countries here. If your country is not on the list then you need a visa to enter Kazakhstan. There are three ways to get it:

  • By contacting the consulate or embassy of Kazakhstan in your country
  • Online through the visa and migration website vmp.gov.kz
  • If there is no diplomatic mission of Kazakhstan in your country and you cannot apply for a visa online, you will be issued a visa at any international airport in Kazakhstan.

How to apply for a visa through a diplomatic mission?

A complete list of diplomatic missions of Kazakhstan in different countries can be found on this page. If there is an embassy or consulate of Kazakhstan in your country, you can apply for a visa in person by submitting the following documents:

  • A valid passport or another document giving the right to cross the border. The validity of the passport must exceed the validity of the requested visa by at least 3 months.
  • A copy or original letter of invitation to visit Kazakhstan*
  • A completed visa application form
  • A photograph measuring 3.5 x 4.5 cm
  • Visa fee payment receipt

In some cases, you may be asked to provide additional documents such as:

  • Hotel booking confirmation
  • Flight booking confirmation

To clarify the list of documents, please contact the relevant embassy or consulate in your country.

How to apply for a visa online?

1. First you need to decide what type of visa you need. Only the following types of visas are currently available for online processing:

  • investor visa A5 (issued to persons investing in the economy of Kazakhstan)
  • business visa B1, B2, B3 (issued to participants of forums, conferences, exhibitions and other scientific and cultural events)
  • tourist visa B12
  • medical visa C12

2. Register on the visa and migration website (you will be asked to enter your first and last name, phone number, e-mail and create a password)

3. Enter the invitation number*

4. Enter your personal data (passport number, gender, citizenship, date of birth, address)

5. Pay the consular fee. As of early 2023, the fee is $60 for a tourist visa, $80 for business and medical visas

6. Print your e-visa and present it at passport control

* To obtain a Kazakhstan visa, foreigners (everyone except Jordanian citizens) must receive an official invitation to visit Kazakhstan. An invitation can be issued by travel companies, hotels, friends, relatives, i.e. any organizations or individuals who are citizens of Kazakhstan.

Do I need a visa if I am transiting through Kazakhstan?

If you are transiting through Kazakhstan to a country that has a visa-free entry agreement with your state, you still need a transit visa for Kazakhstan.

If you are traveling through Kazakhstan in transit by car or any other motor vehicle, such as if you are transporting international goods, you can only use the roads that are open for international road traffic.

Can my visa be denied?

While the majority of visa applications for Kazakhstan are approved, there are certain situations where an application may be denied. These include:

  • Submitting incomplete or false documentation
  • Being a dangerous repeat offender
  • Having been convicted of participating in terrorist acts
  • Violating Kazakhstan's laws during a previous visit
  • Engaging in propaganda of separatism, interstate or interethnic hostility
  • Being a carrier of a dangerous disease that is a contraindication for entry into Kazakhstan.
